About Our PDF to Text Extractor

Extracting text from a PDF is one of the most common document processing tasks — whether you need to copy content for editing, analyse a document programmatically, archive content as plain text, or simply search and reuse text from a report, contract, or research paper. Our free PDF to Text tool makes this process instant and effortless, with no software to install and no account to create.

The extraction engine processes your PDF on our secure server using industry-standard PDF parsing technology. Text content is read directly from the PDF's internal structure, preserving paragraph order and line breaks as accurately as possible. The tool works on single-page and multi-page PDFs — for multi-page documents, each page's text is clearly separated so you can navigate the output easily.

Once extraction is complete, a live stats bar shows you the page count, total word count, and total character count at a glance. You can then copy the text to your clipboard with one click, or download a .txt file named after your original PDF. Both options are available immediately — no waiting, no extra steps.

Note that this tool extracts text from PDFs that contain real, embedded text (sometimes called “searchable” PDFs). If your PDF is a scanned document or consists entirely of images, the tool will inform you that no text was found — scanned documents require OCR (Optical Character Recognition) processing, which is a different technology.

How to Extract Text from a PDF

  1. Upload Your PDF: Drag and drop your PDF into the upload area, or click to browse. Files up to 20MB are supported.
  2. Click Extract Text: Our server processes the PDF and returns all extracted text, organised by page.
  3. Review the Output: The extracted text is displayed in a scrollable panel. You can see the word count and character count instantly.
  4. Copy or Download: Click “Copy” to copy the full text to your clipboard, or click “Download .txt” to save it as a plain text file.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the PDF to text extractor free?

Yes, completely free. No account, no subscription, and no watermarks. Simply upload your PDF, click Extract Text, and copy or download the result instantly.

What types of PDFs can this tool extract text from?

This tool extracts text from PDFs that contain real, selectable text — such as those created from Word documents, spreadsheets, or directly from applications. It cannot extract text from scanned or image-based PDFs. For scanned documents you would need an OCR (Optical Character Recognition) tool.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

Your file is temporarily processed on our secure server solely to extract the text. It is never stored, shared, logged, or retained after the text is returned. The file is discarded immediately after processing.

Does text extraction preserve the original formatting?

The tool extracts plain text and reconstructs lines based on the text positions within the PDF. Paragraphs and page breaks are preserved as best as possible. However, complex formatting such as tables, columns, and headers may not be perfectly preserved — the output is plain text only.

What is the maximum file size?

You can extract text from PDFs up to 20MB in size. If your PDF is larger, consider using our Compress PDF tool first to reduce the file size before extraction.

Can I extract text from a password-protected PDF?

No. Password-protected PDFs cannot be processed. You would need to remove the password protection before uploading the file.
